What is the cheapest way to stay in New York City

What is the cheapest way to stay in New York City?
I live in the Dallas Fort Worth area & might be going to NYC for about 3 nights during Christmas time, what's the cheapest flights, food, ground transportation etc. This will include 1 child (14) & 3 adults (18), (38) & (41). The hotel by the way has to be in a nicer area of NYC. Thanks!

Manhattan during Christmas season is at it's peak of tourist. Hotels are booked, bed and breakfasts are impossible, etc. So I would advise you to make your reservations now. And Manhattan is pricey anyway. And at it peak, it's very, very pricey. The best hotels in the best part of town have prices beyond belief. I live here and I refuse to pay their prices, even in the off season. You're best option for your needs would be a motel. There are a few within walking distance of Midtown which might suffice. Contact the NYC office of Tourism, West 42nd Street & Broadway, Manhattan Telephone 888-VISIT-NY. Have a great holiday.

In regards to hotel and airfare, well that depends on your budget. May I recommend the links below. http://travel.yahoo.com/p-hotel-191501980?fromiy=1 (Hotel room rate in NYC) http://www.airfare.com/ (check and compare airfare from Dallas to NYC) In regards to food, again that depends on your budget. There are thousands of restaurants in the Five Boroughs of New York City. Depending on your taste, your budget and your preferred location, may I recommend the link below. http://www.menupages.com/ -- MenuPages.com is the one of the best website on the online. It included menus with prices, as well as restaurant reviews. In regards to ground transportation, the best and cheapest way to travel to get around the City will be by public transit. The fare on the subway is $2.25 a ride, per person, regardless of distance travels. However, since you're going to be in town for 3 nights, may I recommend purchase a 1-day Fun Pass unlimited ride MetroCard, which will give unlimited ride on the subway and bus system for 1 day. The card cost $8.25 per person, per day ($33 a day). In regard to things to do and see during Christmas, may I recommend the following. there are quite a few sites that you can search that will likely show you great hotels at the best prices available. check out the website BookMe and you will be able to compare prices on all the reputable travel sites in just a couple minutes. it's very convenient and will save you a bunch of time and money. Also, make sure you buy them online... otherwise they charge much higher fees for phone orders. good luck.

DEFINITELY STAY IN HOTEL PENNSYLVANIA! The hotel is located right across the street from Penn Station/ Madison Square Garden which is also very close to Times Square. It was built in 1919 by McKim, Mead & White, They also designed The NYC Municipal building, original Penn Station, which used to stand in what is now Madison Garden, and many other US national landmarks. The hotel's architecture is the gorgeous Neo-Renaissance style. the Hotel is very affordable. there are breathtaking views of the city from the bedrooms too. Glenn Miller, the famous band leader, wrote the song Pennsylvania 6-5000 about the hotel. Glenn Miller also stayed and preformed in the hotel for his Honeymoon, and numerous other times. Hotel Pennsylvania for the last 90 years has been the worlds most popular hotel after serving over 3 million guests! Hotel Penn is very clean and satisfying, and has recently been renovated. Prices range from $99 and up. They also just created larger rooms that can hold a huge amount of people! The hotel has also just recently one an award for being the "greenest" hotel in Manhattan. Unfortunately the Hotel is being threatened for demolition so enjoy the hotel while you can. Even if you don't stay in this hotel please go and add the hotel on myspace and a facebook. If you would like to add them in myspace, their URL is http://www.myspace.com/savethehotel. On facebook, just search Save Hotel Pennsylvania. Also, PLEASE VISIT http://savethehotelpenn.blogspot.com/. The official website of the hotel where you can learn more information on staying there is http://www.hotelpenn.com/. PLEASE HELP AND SAVE THE PAST!
