How much was an ailine flight from Boston, MA to Fort Worth, TX in 1954? Does $100.00 sound right? Or is that considered too high?

This was a very interesting question to research. I found the advertisments on Duke Univ. website via airlines.about.com. From viewing the domestic air prices, $100 might have been too much for a flight from NYC to Texas, but may have been right if the passenger had the additional travel from Boston. Please notice the times it took to travel from NY to San Francisco and Los Angeles: almost 12 hours to San Fran and more than 10 to LA! http://scriptorium.lib.duke.edu/adaccess/T/T23/T2363-72dpi.jpeg With the second ad, you'll see some airfares to European cities along with a domestic coast-to-coast fare of $99. Right next to the fare, you'll see the amount the passenger could pay for a down payment on the price of the ticket. Those prices weren't such a bargain when you realize that in 1954, the year this ad was produced, the average person earned less than $3,000 per year. In the '50's, air travel was for the wealthy. That was too large a chunk of a middle-class income. http://scriptorium.lib.duke.edu/adaccess/T/T21/T2110-72dpi.jpeg
